Why paid promotion never changes comparison facts
See how Annuvell Local keeps comparison facts and organic results separate from paid placements. Understand what Featured means, how labels work, and why all businesses are treated equally.
Comparing local businesses should always be about the facts, not about who pays more. Whether you are a customer looking for a reliable service or a business owner wanting fair treatment, it matters that listings and comparisons are transparent and trustworthy. Here, you will learn exactly how Annuvell Local keeps paid promotion separate from the facts and what the Featured label really means.
Comparison facts are set by evidence, not by payment
Annuvell Local lists facts about each business so you can compare them side by side. These comparison facts are not influenced by advertising or payment. Instead, each fact is drawn from one of several sources and always carries a clear label:
- Verified means the fact comes from the business’s own published information and has been backed by evidence. For example, if a business states its opening hours on its website and this can be checked, the hours will be labelled verified.
- Provided by the business appears when the business owner, having verified their ownership, supplies details directly. This helps you know which information is coming straight from the source, with the owner's confirmation.
- Stated is used when the business itself publishes a fact, but it has not been independently verified. You can see what the business claims, but it is not double-checked.
- Not stated means there is no evidence either way. Importantly, this never means "No"—it simply reflects that no information is available for that fact.
No matter what plan a business is on, these labels do not change. You can read more about this approach in the guide: How Annuvell comparisons work.
Organic ordering is never changed by payment
When you search or browse on Annuvell Local, the order in which businesses appear is determined by organic relevance. This might be distance from your postcode, completeness of the listing, or other neutral factors—not by who has paid for a placement.
Editorial guides, such as those that help you choose a business, are also never for sale. The advice, comparisons and category listings you see are written and ordered independently of any paid plan or advertising. This rule means that whether a business is paying for visibility or not, it cannot buy a better position in search results or a stronger showing in a side-by-side comparison.
What Featured means—and what it does not
Featured is a paid visibility placement on Annuvell Local. When a paid plan is available, a business can choose to appear as Featured, but this comes with strict boundaries:
- A Featured listing is always clearly labelled as such, so you can see which businesses have paid for this visibility.
- These placements appear separately from organic results, matched to the search or category so they are relevant but do not mix with unpaid listings.
- Featured status affects only the number of impressions (how often the listing is shown in these labelled spots) and clicks (visitors who view the listing from this spot). It does not change the facts shown, the labels on those facts, or the order of businesses in the main (organic) results.
- A business cannot buy its way to the top of search results, nor can it pay to have its comparison facts changed or to appear more favourably in a side-by-side view.
If you are comparing several businesses using the compare tool, you will see the same facts, with the same labels, regardless of whether any of them are Featured.
Claimed, Verified, Premium and Featured: independent and transparent
It is helpful to understand these four terms, as they each mean something different:
- Claimed: When a business owner has taken control of their listing, it is marked as claimed. This step is free and simply means the owner can edit and update their own information.
- Verified: Annuvell Local completes an ownership check, and the listing shows a Verified badge. This cannot be bought or accelerated by paying for any plan. It just confirms the business is controlled by its real owner.
- Premium: Premium is a subscription that gives business owners extra features. It does not affect comparison facts, organic ordering, or search result positions.
- Featured: As above, Featured is a paid placement for extra visibility, always labelled, and does not influence organic ranking or facts.
None of these statuses affect each other, except that a business must be claimed before it can be verified or subscribe to Premium or Featured plans. All are independent, and no payment can change the facts as they appear to customers.
How to spot paid placements and fact labels
Transparency is built directly into the way listings are shown. As a customer, you can tell at a glance:
- Which facts are verified, stated, provided by the business, or not stated—all are labelled next to the fact itself in the listing and in the compare tool.
- Whether a business is Featured: look for the clear Featured label on the listing, which separates paid visibility from regular results.
- If a listing is Verified, it will have its own badge, unrelated to payment.
- Any Premium features will be shown, but these do not alter how facts are labelled or ranked.
For business owners, this same system is a reassurance: your listing is treated exactly the same as everyone else's, and you cannot lose your organic position to a paid advert. Your Verified badge is earned by establishing ownership, not by signing up to a paid plan. Features you pay for are clearly marked and do not influence the editorial or factual side of comparisons. You can see more about how this benefits owners in the guide: How verified business information helps customers choose you.
Why the separation benefits both customers and businesses
Keeping payment and factual comparison completely separate creates a fairer marketplace for everyone. For customers, it means:
- You can trust that the facts you see are evidence-based, not paid for.
- You know exactly where each piece of information comes from, thanks to the public labels.
- No business can pay to hide a negative fact or to exaggerate a positive one—if it is not published or verified, it is simply shown as Not stated, not No.
For business owners, the same separation means:
- Competing on a level playing field, where factual accuracy and service—not advertising budget—determine how you are compared.
- The ability to stand out with a Featured placement, but always with the clear understanding that your facts and ranking are not up for sale.
- Clear communication with potential customers, as each fact is openly labelled and customers know how to interpret what they see.
